New York City Marathon | NYC Marathon Lottery Announced

Thursday, July 29th, 2010

Attention all runners: The NYC Marathon is only 213 days away! That may sound like a lot of time to train for the New York City Marathon, but as the NYC Marathon web site points out, training for a 26.2 mile race with hills, winds, crowds and more can be grueling. Only about 38,000 runners are allowed into the NYC Marathon entry pool and the lottery today pulled those entry names. If your name didn’t get pulled by the NYC Marathon lottery, you can still run to get payday cash for charity.

NYC Marathon history

When 40 runners got together in 1948, they started the New York Road Runners, which eventually started the NYC Marathon. The race covers all five boroughs in New York City and is one of the most popular marathons in the world. {The tough course, doubled with the support of the New York Road Runners, also makes it one of the best marathons in the United States}.The New York Road Runners still continue to operate the New York City Marathon, though they have added ING as a “title sponsor”

NYC Marathon Lottery

The organizers of the NYC Marathon always get more applications to run in the marathon than the route can hold. In order to handle this, the NYRR and ING (the NYC Marathon title sponsor) hold a “runner’s lottery”. The NYRR Marathon web site will tell you if you are in the marathon or not. If you didn’t get in to the NYC Marathon as a competitor, you can still run for quick cash for charity. If runners that won the lottery choose not to compete, they can use their spot in the 2011 marathon instead.

Training for the New York City Marathon

Training is the most important part of planning to run any marathon, including the NYC Marathon. Even very trained athletes consider marathons a challenge. It is important to pay attention to nutrition, hydration, practice, and physical conditioning. The NYRR offer everything from 10k training races all the way up to 15 week intensive training practices.Even if you don’t plan on running a marathon, starting a running program can be a great way to start your summer.

Obama and Shakira, what a pair

The National Security Council, the Domestic Policy Council and pop singer Shakira met today to discuss early childhood development. After she addressed the councils, she got to go into the Oval Office and meet with Obama, where she says they further talked about childhood development. Shakira is one of the best selling female artists of all time, and she lends her star power to causes she supports and need money now.

Early childhood development education

The programs and efforts that Shakira met with Obama and the councils about are focused on educating parents and leaders about providing proper stimulation and nutrition to children during the first six years of life. Fox News says she was in Washington, D.C. to support the ALAS foundation which encourages early childhood development education in the Latin American world.

Shakira said she and the president also talked about childhood obesity, a cause that Michelle Obama has taken on in the U.S. When Shakira was 18, she started a foundation in Columbia called Barefoot Foundation, which provides education and nutrition to children in areas of conflict.
